Our Philosohpy

"Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try!" --Dr. Seuss

Our Philosophy

Through the magical connections they forge with the world around them, children discover and nurture the very essence of their being. Within our close-knit learning and wider community, we weave collaborative partnerships that speak the language of love, kindness, and respect. These bonds allow us to truly know our families and celebrate their unique cultural and aspirational identities. In an environment where authentic relationships thrive, children experience emotional security, acceptance, and with intention, are supported to embark on a wondrous journey of learning and self-discovery.

Our practice is guided by principles that weave connections: partnership, participation, and protection, guided by our bicultural curriculum, Te Whāriki. We wholeheartedly embrace the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, respecting the profound significance of weaving core kaupapa Māori into our centre philosophy and core values. Our commitment extends beyond mere words; it’s a heartfelt dedication to nurturing Māori language, culture, and aspirations. By doing so, we honour our collective identity.

Social and emotional competence helps children build healthy relationships, navigate their environments effectively, and lays the foundation for long-term success. Within our nurturing learning environment, teachers foster open communication and mutual respect. They guide children through social interactions and offer emotional support when needed. Recognising each child’s uniqueness, our teachers collaborate with families to not only nurture social and emotional development, but the holistic child as a taonga (precious gift).

Our Mission Statement

In harmony with the guiding principles of Te Whāriki, our mission is to honour and nurture the innate uniqueness and potential of every tamaiti (child), embracing them in aroha (love)and fostering a sense of belonging and connection through whanaungatanga (relationships). We commit to creating an environment that exemplifies Manaakitanga (caring), offering respect, care, and encouragement as we guide the holistic development of each tamaiti (child). Our commitment is to nurture children through meaningful play and exploration, embracing the journey of learning as a collaborative, yet honouring their individuality.

I addition to our dedication to the tamariki, we equally commit to supporting and valuing our kaiako and whānau, fostering, an inclusive community where open dialogue, mutual respect and shared knowledge enrich us all.

Our Program

The Secret Garden provides a very personal approach to your child's early childhood education, with internationally acclaimed programs and philosophies at its core. Our experience tells us that there's no 'one size fits all' approach, so we've created a program all of our own that is flexible and adaptable to the needs of your child as they grow and develop.

Ours is an inviting and engaging environment where children are able to explore, play and learn simultaneously. We provide structured learning alongside opportunities for self expression and free play.

Te Whāriki is used as the foundation for our learning environment. The program's framework emphasises the learning partnership between teachers, parents and whanau. Teachers create a holistic curriculum in response to children's learning and development in the early childhood setting and the wider context of the child's world. Through this program it is our goal to help children prepare for future learning environments. Information for parents

What to pack for your child

We provide a range of learning experiences, some of which can be messy. Messy play is crucial to your child’s cognitive and creative development, helping their learning process and promoting engagement with the senses!

We advise dressing your child in clothing that is comfortable and suitable for active play, water play and messy play. We advocate for our children to enjoy and explore the outdoors and the rich learning and development that comes with experiencing our seasons.

- A schoolbag that is clearly labelled with your child's name.

- At least three changes of clothes, all clearly named.

- A clearly named sunhat for summer or warm hat, jacket and gumboots for winter.

- For children in nappies, please supply a packet that will be individually named and stored at preschool (you will be informed when more is needed).

- A named lunchbox containing enough food for the session/day, being morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea, you are more than welcome to prepare and provide a thermos flask with warm food. (We don’t have the facility to heat food).

- A named drink bottle, please note we have filtered water on tap.

(We are a nut free preschool).

Transitioning your child and saying goodbye

To support the individual child and family commitments and routines, we offer a flexible transition process, where one size doesn’t fit all. We do recommend a minimum of three visits with a parent/whānau/care giver, and then an independent visit, before starting your child’s official enrolment.

We understand that parting with your child can be an unsettling time for both parent and child. Our professional team at The Secret Garden are here to help make this process a smoother one and are with you every step of the way.

Some children settle in straight away, while others take a little longer, but with patience, understanding, love and support, your child will develop their trust and sense of belonging.

We recommend saying a quick goodbye to your child as lengthy goodbyes can make your eventual departure more difficult for your child. Our team will be on hand to reassure your child, with a range of techniques and strategies to assist them to settle quickly, confidently and happily.

You are always more than welcome to ring us at any time of the session to check how your child is getting on and we will certainly keep in touch as they settle in.

Illness

We are very vigilant with sickness and keep a close eye on our children and always alert parents immediately to any signs of illness.

We do have a robust sickness policy to ensure we are doing all we can to minimise the spread of illnesses to the best of our ability.

We do ask that you keep your child home should they display the following symptoms:

- A temperature over 38 degrees Celsius (returning after 48 hours temperature free)

- Coloured discharge from your child's nose

- Unidentified rash or spots

- Inflamed throat or eyes

- Persistent cough

- Vomiting or diarrhoea (returning 48 hours after the last symptom)

About us

Welcome to The Secret Garden.

Secret Garden HOWICK

Our beautiful purpose designed space is designed for a maximum of 44 children aged from 2 years to school starting age.

Our indoor area has been created by architects who know how kids play and learn. Beautifully equipped with hand selected resources our light and bright interior is designed to stay warm in winter and cool in summer. A uniquely designed ceiling tilt creates interesting shapes and shadows for growing minds and reduces noise reverberation, allowing our children to learn in a quieter, calmer environment.

Outside is even more exciting, with sheltered nooks for mud pie parties, a dual slide and a nature inspired water play feature. With landscaped tracks and play equipment derived from nature there’s plenty of places for kids to get their daily dose of Vitamin D. Our carefully tended garden beds, fruit trees, flowers and natives will keep growing gardeners and explorers busy no matter what the season.

Children adore discovering and learning both inside and out, hence we’ve created plenty of opportunities for both. It is our aim that all children at The Secret Garden receive a wide range of rich learning experiences whilst they feel 'at home' in a genuinely warm and nurturing environment.

Children are encouraged to develop their personal capabilities, strengths, interests and learning styles. Our experienced team of professional Early Childhood Educators strive to ensure each and every child at The Secret Garden LOVES their time at preschool and has their individual needs met with love, patience and understanding. Our teachers encourage children to think for themselves, make decisions and work towards their own solutions, by expressing their own ideas and feelings.

We work together closely with parents and families to ensure all of our children are happy, healthy and fulfilling their absolute potential for learning. We feel it is a privilege to play such an important part in nurturing and guiding your children through their preschool years and we genuinely love what we do.

We hope you will visit us at The Secret Garden soon, but in the meantime please don't hesitate to get in touch by phone or email for a chat.

Our Team

KEVIN (QI) CHEN

Owner

Kevin and Stacey are the proud co-owners of The Secret Garden Howick with Jodi. Kevin and Jodi met in the New Zealand Police around 10 years ago before both leaving to pursue different opportunities.

Kevin is a family man and has three sons, Ayden, Adrian and Asher previously and currently attend The Secret Garden.

Kevin currently lives in Whitford with his family.

He is a jack of all trades, has a degree in woman’s fashion design, has owned successful hospitality businesses and has enjoyed his time learning and being a part of the early childhood sector.

Kevin spends countless hours on site ensuring the centre remains a high-quality beautiful place for your child to thrive.

JODI WALKER

Owner/Operator

Jodi has always had a love for children and education. With both her Mum and sister having established two successful preschools, early childhood education is in the blood.

After an eleven-year career in the NZ Police, including working as an investigator with the child protection team, front line policing and an overseas deployment Jodi and her husband Simon decided to start a family of their own.

Now with four children of her own, Jodi has succumbed to the pull of working in early childhood education and has fulfilled her long held dream of opening a centre of her own. Fresh air, mud pies and jumping in puddles are just as important to Jodi as preparing children with the skills they need to develop and thrive out in the big wide world. Jodi opened The Secret Garden in Huapai and has enjoyed it so much she thought it was time to grow.

After finally finding the perfect property in Howick, and putting many hours of blood, sweat and tears, into ensuring it’s a high-quality service that supports each child in reaching their full potential Jodi has been enjoying every second of the fulfilling Secret Garden journey.
